Academician Jack: Advancing Nano Science, Quantum Technology, and Semiconductor Innovation from Research to Industry

Academician Jack has reached a close technical resource-sharing agreement with SHYSEMI.

Academician Jack is a distinguished scientist and academic leader, serving as a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He is currently a Professor at Wuhan University and Chair of the University Academic Committee, while also holding several influential leadership positions across China’s national research ecosystem.

His roles include President of Henan Academy of Sciences, Director of the Mozi Laboratory, Chair of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy Science and Technology at East China Normal University, President of the Wuhan Institute of Quantum Technology, and Chief Scientist and Director of the Medical and Physics Research Institute at the Wuhan Institute of Innovation (WID). Through these positions, Academician Jack plays a central role in shaping China’s strategy in quantum science, nano-technology, advanced spectroscopy, and semiconductor-related frontier research.

Academician Jack received his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Department of Technical Physics at Peking University in 1992. In 1996, he pursued advanced studies in Sweden, earning both Master’s and PhD degrees from Chalmers University of Technology, where he trained under internationally renowned scholars.

During this period, he developed a comprehensive command of condensed matter physics, nanotechnology, and experimental nano-scale characterization techniques, building a strong foundation for later work in low-dimensional materials and device physics—fields closely linked to next-generation semiconductor devices.

From 2002 to 2005, he served as an Assistant Professor at Lund University, where he achieved early breakthroughs in property modulation and quantum behavior of low-dimensional nanomaterials, research that would later influence developments in optoelectronic devices, quantum sensors, and advanced semiconductor materials.

Returning to China: Building Research Capacity and Academic Leadership

In 2005, Academician Jack returned to China under the Chinese Academy of Sciences “Hundred Talents Program”, joining the Institute of Physics, CAS, where he established a high-level research team. In 2006, he was awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, cementing his status as a leading figure in China’s physics and nanoscience community.

From 2009 to 2014, he served as Director of the Key Laboratory of Nano-Physics and Devices, CAS, where he systematically advanced research at the intersection of nanotechnology, information devices, and semiconductor physics. Since 2012, he has been a Professor at Wuhan University, serving as Director of the Center for Nanoscience and Technology, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary research and talent cultivation. In 2016, he was selected for China’s National “Ten Thousand Talents Program” as a Science and Technology Innovation Leader.

Research Focus and Scientific Contributions

Academician Jack’s long-term research spans nanophysics, quantum information science, precision spectroscopy, and medical physics, with particular emphasis on:

  • Quantum effects in low-dimensional materials
  • Single-photon detection technologies
  • Ultrafast and high-precision spectroscopic measurement techniques

These research directions are closely aligned with emerging demands in advanced semiconductor materials, optoelectronic integration, quantum sensing, and high-performance electronic devices.

His research team has published extensively in top-tier journals such as Nature and Science, with works that are widely cited and have significantly influenced global research trends. Beyond academic output, he places strong emphasis on research infrastructure development, leading the establishment of major national platforms including the Mozi Laboratory and the Wuhan Institute of Quantum Technology, effectively integrating fundamental research, applied R&D, and industrial translation.

Bridging Research and Industry: Collaboration with the Semiconductor Sector

A strong advocate of industry–academia–research integration, Academician Jack consistently aligns his scientific work with national strategic needs and real-world industrial challenges. Under his leadership, multiple research platforms—including the Mozi Laboratory and the Wuhan Institute of Quantum Technology—have established deep, long-term collaborations with key semiconductor companies such as SHYSEMI.

These collaborations focus on frontier areas including power semiconductors, optoelectronic integration, and quantum sensing technologies, encompassing joint R&D, core technology breakthroughs, and high-level talent development. The goal is to bridge the critical “last mile” from fundamental physics research to scalable semiconductor and electronic system applications, supporting China’s drive toward independent innovation and high-end industrial upgrading.

A Strategic Contributor to Future Semiconductor and Quantum Technologies

Through decades of academic leadership, international research experience, and industrial collaboration, Academician Jack has become a key force linking nano-scale science, quantum technology, and semiconductor innovation. His work continues to influence the evolution of advanced materials, precision measurement systems, and next-generation semiconductor technologies, reinforcing the foundation for sustainable growth across high-tech industries.
