An IPM (Intelligent Power Module) is a system that integrates multiple resistors, capacitors, driver ICs, IGBTs, and FRDs. It receives commands from a controller and adjusts the motor's current and voltage based on parameters such as motor speed and load, thereby controlling the motor's start, stop, speed, and direction. It features consistent switching parameters, low cost, and high reliability.
IPMs are widely used, typically within the motor's controller or inverter, though their specific location varies depending on the application. This SHYSEMI presentation takes inverter air conditioners as an example to illustrate IPM functions.

1.Temperature Control
The IPM precisely controls current and voltage to achieve precise temperature control in the air conditioning system. When the indoor temperature is above the set point, the IPM increases the compressor speed to accelerate cooling; when the indoor temperature is below the set point, the IPM decreases the compressor speed to reduce energy consumption.
This intelligent temperature control method allows inverter air conditioners to adjust according to actual needs, improving user comfort.
2.Protection Functions
The IPM has multiple protection functions, such as overcurrent, overvoltage, and undervoltage protection. If an abnormality occurs in the air conditioning system, the IPM will promptly cut off power to protect the compressor and the entire system from damage. Furthermore, the IPM has an overheating protection function. When the module temperature is too high, it automatically reduces the operating current or stops operation to prevent overheating and damage.
3.Energy Savings
Because the IPM can precisely control the compressor's operating speed and operating time, it can effectively reduce the energy consumption of the air conditioning system. Compared to traditional fixed-frequency air conditioners, inverter air conditioners have a higher energy efficiency ratio and can adjust cooling/heating efficiency according to actual needs, avoiding unnecessary energy waste.
4.SHYSEMI IPM Series for Air Conditioners (Package: SIP35)
(The IPMs replaces the ON Semiconductor Mpower-1502, substituting the 6-unit power module with PFC circuitry for applications in the 1000–2000W range, where high APF requirements necessitate a PFC circuit.)
SHYSEMI’s intelligent power modules that integrate 3Φ full bridge inverter function and PFC function. This simplifies electronic control design, reduces PCB footprint, streamlines assembly processes, improves reliability, and reduces overall cost. It is suitable for electronic control applications in consumer electronics and low-power industrial applications with motor drives and single-phase PFC.
The SIP35 package design provides excellent thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and safe creepage clearance. It also offers excellent EMI performance and protection against overcurrent, overtemperature, and undervoltage. The 3Φ full-bridge IGBT utilizes low-power IGBTs and FRDs and is suitable for carrier frequencies of 5 to 15 kHz. The PFC IGBT is suitable for switching frequencies below 60 kHz, making it suitable for various consumer and industrial applications.
In short, the use of IPM modules in motor controllers and inverters aims to achieve intelligent motor control and efficient operation, thereby improving the efficiency and performance of the entire system.
